Otakon 2004
If you are looking at this page you should know that i was just in Baltimore for something called Otakon. This as you should have guessed is a nerd fest which focuses on three main categories (only two i really associate with). Those categories are Anime, Asian Culture, and Video Gaming. As you should guess i only relate to Anime and Video Gaming but i did experience all three. Anyway, moving on, all this is accomplished by renting out the Baltimore Convention Center. There are plenty of things to do including watching anime (obviously), going to panels and workshops about all three categories, playing video games in a giant auditorium, looking in the art room at local artists' work, going to the dealers room which is just shopping for lots of stuff, live action role play which is where all the nerds who dress up like anime and game characters hang out because reality is too devistating for them, and there is plenty more.
Hmm, i guess the easiest way i should tackle this over view of my past weekend is to just explain what i did each day, the highlights, the pictures, the shit we encountered, etc etc. First of all let me introduce the people I went with.
In order of appearance... into my head - in other words alphabetical order
Tim Derr - Since i didnt have a picture of Tim since he was the driver i had to create one from my recollection. Since he was the driver, we used him for his car. Other than that, he doesn't really talk too much. Maybe this is just in comparrison to Glick or myself who don't shut up at all. When Tim does talk its generally funny, and some of the most memorable quotes from this trip were said by him. Recieved the Otakon '04 MVP award.
Chris Glick - Some might remember Glick from his short, and i mean short (1 post), presense on my website. He is probably the most intelligent and therefore the most sarcastic, assholish person i went with. Glick never shuts up, which is sometimes good like during the day, but awful at night when all we wanted to do was go to sleep and all Glick wanted to do was talk about his love affair of lamps (ala Anchorman). Unfortunately, every trip needs a person to take the blame of everyone elses mistakes (for isntance it was myself on my senior trip to Disney World) and this time it was Glick. Lucky for us, he took it pretty well, and to the best of my knowledge i'm not on his 'revenge list.'
Josh Lindy - Lindy took the role of team leader, which is simple enough for him seeing as he was captain of our high school football team. Besides that, Lindy lead our team to some of the better panels (i'll go into explanation when i get to the days) and was often critical of the people speaking there. Since he was covered with poison ivy and he is a big guy, he made the rest of us sleep on the floor of our hotel room, this is where he got the nickname of 'King Lindy.' Lucky for us, he was compassionate and let Glick sleep with him the first night and seceded his throne to Tim the second night.
Matt Starr - Me... If you have read any of my website, or know me personally, you know how i act and this trip was no exception. I was designated as navigator by Tim but Lindy wouldnt let me sit in the front seat on the way down so I navigated from the back seat, i guess its really not that big of a deal but i like flipping shit. Besides that, Glick and I egged each other on, so I was constantly saying how much i hate him, and he was constantly annoying the hell out of me.
Introductions aside, its time to take a look at the first day down in Baltimore.
