Matt Starr's 80s Experience
"It will knock your socks off"
- You're the best -- Joe Essposito
This song started off the idea. I heard it in a bar and looked for it and promptly sang its lyrics all over my apartment and school. One of the St. Bonaventure Divers noted right away “What is this a song for kids? Is the barney song up next?” and I just had to laugh because he was absolutely right.
- Safety Dance -- Men Without Hats
If you have an 80s CD with out this song, then you are on crack. Period.
- Karma Chameleon -- Culture Club
I am sad to say that this song was stuck in my head from 2 years ago when I heard it for the first time.
- Hungry Like the Wolf -- Duran Duran
You cant help but laugh at this fucking song. My friend Jeff was warming up some dive and as he’s walking down the board this song came on and he nearly fell off the side of the board laughing.
- Don't You Want Me? -- The Human League
I saw this song on a website listed as the corniest song of the 1980s. I have heard the song before but I’m still a little disappointed that this made the CD. I have 2 alternates waiting if I feel like making a change (everybody wants to rule the world -- tears for fears and It’s my life -- talk talk)
- Wake Me Up (Before You Go-Go) -- Wham!
Once again Jeff was walking down the board here’s the beginning of this song “Jitterbug” and starts laughing uncontrollably. He later notes that if he dies in a freak gasoline fight accident that this song will be played at his funeral.
- 99 Luftballons – Nena
Its not that I’m disappointed with this song, but I really wanted the german version and I could not find it. It also helps that this was redone in the 90s by another artist.
- Hip to be square -- Huey Lewis and the News
This is one of two songs I borrowed from the movie American Psycho. Oddly I got into a wrestling match Friday night with some friends on the team and I was listening to this right before hand. In the movie this song is being played when the main character, Patrick Bateman, takes an axe to a co-workers face.
- Eye of the tiger -- Survivor
From Rocky III. I almost left this off by accident and I had to take off a song in order to make it fit.
- Simply Irresistable -- Robert Palmer
I didn’t want to use more than one song per artist and Robert Palmer also had “Addicted to Love” and after some careful consideration I chose this song over it.
- Take me home tonight -- Eddie Money
I have no reason to make this song fit, other than its from the 80s and it fit. This was the last song I added.
- Sussudio -- Phil Collins
This is the other song from American Psycho. I am not sure if it is prudent to say the context of the song (look at this link, and look for the quote starting with “Do you like Phil Collins?”) in the movie but never-the-less it has made it to one of the funniest songs I had on my list.
- She Drives me crazy -- Fine Young Cannibals
This is one of the two songs that I added purely because Weird Al Yankovic had a parody of it and I thought it was funny just because of that.
- The Final Countdown -- Europe
This is another one of those songs where if you make an 80s CD, this song has to be on there.
- Anyway you want it -- Journey
I admit, this song is not corny, or cheesy, but it was funny. Rodney Dangerfield dancing to this at the end of Caddyshack made this song to this list.
- Video killed the radio star -- the buggles
Once again, this song seemed very appropriate to what I was trying to do with this song. Having it remade again in the 90s further clarifies this.
- take on me -- a-ha
One of the three songs on this list that was helped generated by South Park episodes (the other two are “You’re the best” and “Scarface (push it to the limit)”. Hell, this was a great song to add besides that though.
- I've got my mind set on you -- george harrison
This is the other Weird Al song. He made a parody off of it called “This song is just six words long”. Not only is it a nice parody, but it also truly is an adjective for the original song.
- rockit -- herbie hancock
Dan helped me add this song. This was the song that was played in Zoolander (yeah I know, two songs from this movie too) when Hansel and the DJ were having a break dance fight at the end. It’s purely instrumental and it fits the corniness of the 80s with its synthesizer and what not.
- Scarface (push it to the limit) - Paul Engemann
If you hear this song, you will know what it is and laugh. Then you won’t be able to get it out of your head for the rest of the month. This was an easy choice to add.
